Jon D. Boshart, Ph.D Obituary
Jon D, Boshart,Ph.D, 80, of Barnegat, NJ, and Jersey City, NJ, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Born in Lowville, New York, on January 10, 1946, he was the son of the late Earl and Gertrude Boshart.
Jon devoted much of his life to education, faith, art, and service. He was a longtime professor and chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, where he taught for 50 years. In recognition of his extraordinary dedication to the university, he was recently honored with the Bene Merenti Award for his many years of distinguished service. Prior to beginning his academic career, he worked briefly at Marsh & McLennan in New York City.
Following his graduation from Lowville Academy, Jon attended Wadhams Hall Seminary in New York. He was later awarded a scholarship to the Pontifical North American College in Rome, where he pursued advanced studies in theology. He also studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He continued his education at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, earning advanced degrees in art history and Italian literature.
Upon returning to the United States, Jon settled in Jersey City and began his distinguished tenure at Saint Peter’s College, now Saint Peter’s University. Throughout his academic career, his teaching and research reflected his deep interest in art, Italian culture, and spirituality. He shared these passions with generations of students through museum seminars in New York City and study-abroad programs.
Jon was also closely associated with the Friends of the Word ministry and Father Louis Scurti. He served on the Friends of the Word Board of Trustees and participated in and helped coordinate numerous religious pilgrimages and educational journeys, including trips to the Holy Land, France, and Spain. His faith, scholarship, and love of travel were important parts of his life and complemented his lifelong commitment to education.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Dr. Gregory Boshart, Thomas Boshart, and Donald Boshart. He is survived by his loving nieces and nephews, Belinda, Brenda, Douglas, Bethany, Suzanne, Karen, Timothy, Sean, and Virginia.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 12 noon at the Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in Paterson, NJ. Friends may visit at the mausoleum beginning at 11 am. Entombment will follow the Funeral Mass.

Gifts should be made payable to Saint Peter’s University with a note that it is for the Prof. Jon Boshart Fine Arts Department Memorial Scholarship.
