Born in Jersey City, the Reverend Louis J. Scurti was ordained a Catholic priest in 1973. For thirty-one years, he served William Paterson University as director of the Catholic Campus Ministry, the Bishop Rodimer Catholic Campus Ministry Center (CCMC), and Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Chapel. He was the host of “The Word: Alive and Well,” the Catholic Campus Ministry Communication’s flagship television production, which aired on forty cable networks throughout the country and on his website. Prior to this Father Scurti served on the faculties of
-St. Pius High School, Passaic NJ &
-De Paul High School, Wayne, NJ.
He also celebrated Masses on Sundays and served the following parishes:
-St. Patrick’s Chatham 8 years
-St Rose of Lima, East Hanover, 6 years
-Sts Peter & Paul, Hoboken, NJ 4 years
-Annunciation, Wayne, NJ 8 yeRS
An artist, whose paintings, Stations of the Cross, hung on the walls of the chapel until a subsequent campus minister removed and destroyed them.
His paintings are, as well, as in many private collections. Father Scurti worked as an adjunct professor both at the University and St. Peter’s College in the Fine Arts, Sociology and History Departments.
He is also a NJ & FL licensed marriage and family therapist, and worked closely with the William Paterson University’s Counseling, Health, and Wellness Center.
The volunteer programs Father Lou has initiated at the University include{
-the annual Thanksgiving Awareness
-and Shelter the Homeless programs, which over the years, have netted tens of thousands of dollars directly to county agencies that feed and house the poor. He also initiated outreach programs to:
-Preakness Nursing Home, Paterson, NJ
-the North Jersey Developmental Center, Totowa, NJ and
-Eva’s Kitchen Paterson, NJ
-Father English Community Center

A highlight of Father Lou’s mission at William Paterson was the construction of the CCMCenter & Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Chapel & CCMCommunications Center. Some of the funds came from the Prepare the Way campaign and personal donations from Bishop Frank J. Rodimer, to construct the Jesus Christ Prince of Peace Chapel and the Bishop Frank J. Rodimer Catholic Campus Ministry Center and private donations.
Dedicated in 1999, the chapel and center became an Ecumenical gathering place and “home away from home” for University students, faculty, and staff, as well as members of the local community. Among the special events offered at the chapel were alumni & faculty weddings, baptisms, and funerals, biannual healing Masses, the Annual Communion Breakfast, Beefsteak “9/11 Public Servants Mass” and Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Confirmations, the Universality Masses (celebrating the universal heritage of Catholicism, in various ethnic languages), memorials, concerts performed by the CCMC Music Ministry and William Paterson University Music Department students and faculty, Annual Lenten Christian Art Exhibit, and all special events of the liturgical year.
Father Scurti holds the following academic degrees:
M.A. master of fine arts from Montclair State University; and an
Educational Specialist degree in Marriage and Family Mediation from La Salle University.
In May 2000, Father Lou was awarded his Ph.D. in Marriage & Family Therapy from the Department of Psychology and Human Services of Seton Hall University.
He is a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in NJ & FL.
AWARDS & HONORS
Father Louis Scurti was honored with the Haledon Rotary Club’s 2005 Community Service Award.
In 2009 the Passionists honored Fr. Lou with the “Passionist Presence Award”
The William Paterson University Board of Trustees bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on Fr. Lou Scurti, at Commencement, 2010.
The last Mass that Father Scurti celebrated at the Chapel was May 30, 2010,
